The World Self-Medication Industry (WSMI) has changed its name to the Global Self-Care Federation. Alan Main, chair of the industry association, said the new name reflected a “fundamental change and shift in identity”.
According to Main, the new name repositioned the association as “a more outward looking organisation”. He said the association was ready to collaborate strategically with influential and credible partners to make sure the self-medication industry had a voice in the developing healthcare debate.
The change of name was announced today at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Association of the European Self-Medication Industry, the AESGP, in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Global Self-Care Federation – which is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) – is using the slogan “Better self-care. Better healthcare”.
The association says it is “dedicated to a world where self-care increasingly contributes to better health and more sustainable healthcare systems”.
Main told delegates attending the AESGP Annual Meeting that the world was “changing very rapidly”.
We are seeing a growing global population that is ageing fast in certain parts of the world but is young in other parts of the world, said Main, adding that consumers were engaging in healthcare in ways that we have never seen before.
When it comes to healthcare, added Main, people were “demanding more convenience, more transparency and more affordability”.
He also highlighted the “explosion in data-driven solutions and the need for more personalisation by the individual”.
“As an industry,” he observed, “we can’t just keep the pace we also have to set the pace to ensure we are continuing to be seen as relevant in the global healthcare environment.”
Set against this background, Main said the industry needed a new global organisation that was outward looking, was progressive and would help shape the agenda of healthcare into the future.
