Shop Apotheke records 14.7% non-prescription growth

Shop Apotheke Europe said its non-prescription sales had risen by 14.7% in the first quarter of 2022.

The Netherlands-based online pharmacy expects to grow sales of everything-but-prescription by between 15% and 25% in the full year of 2022.

Reporting preliminary results for the first quarter of 2022, Shop Apotheke Europe said total sales had reached EUR305 million (USD330 million), representing a rise of 7.2% compared to the same period a year earlier.

The company said the rise had been achieved in a “slightly challenging economic environment” and was compared with a strong performance in the first quarter of 2021.

“Growth was driven by the persistent expansion of new customer numbers and high customer satisfaction,” commented the company.

Shop Apotheke Europe said the number of active customers across Europe had risen by 0.4 million during the quarter to 8.3 million. The rise was 1.5 million compared to the first quarter of 2021.

The company noted that prescription sales were around EUR30 million, indicating the “bottoming-out of the decline”.

Sales by region

Sales in the DACH segment – Germany, Austria and Switzerland – were up by 1.7% to EUR235 million in the first quarter of 2022. The segment generated 77% of total sales.

Shop Apotheke Europe said non-prescription sales in the DACH segment had increased by 10% but prescription sales had fallen by 32.7% to EUR30 million.

Meanwhile, sales in the International segment – covering Belgium, France, Italy and the Netherlands – increased by 30.8% to EUR70 million.

German television advertising

Shop Apotheke Europe said a new television advertising campaign in Germany had “got off to a positive start” in April 2022.

The campaign uses the slogan “So einfach muss das” which translates as “As easy as can be”. It features popular German celebrities showing how Shop Apotheke makes it easy to take care of your own health.
