Sanofi Consumer Healthcare's Alan Main has been elected chair of the World Self-Medication Industry (WSMI).

Main is executive vice president of Sanofi and global head of the French pharmaceutical company's Consumer Healthcare division.

He takes over from GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare's chief executive officer Brian McNamara who has completed a two-year term as chair of the WSMI. McNamara will remain a member of the WSMI's Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

Commenting on his WSMI role, Main said there had "never been a greater need for the innovation we bring to help consumers live healthier and fuller lives". "We live in a digital era of great promise, where we can truly transform how consumers take control of their health," he added.

Judy Stenmark, director general of the WSMI, said the industry association had a "unique opportunity to be the global champion of self-care".
