Peterson to retire from Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson has announced that Sandra Peterson, who oversees the company's Consumer and Medical Devices divisions, will retire as group worldwide chairman on 1 October 2018.

During Peterson's tenure, the Consumer division had recorded "solid improvement", said Johnson & Johnson, and the US OTC business had been "restored to growth".

Furthermore, the Vision Care business had "regained market leadership in contact lenses" and had "become a leader in eye health", pointed out Johnson & Johnson.

The company added that Peterson had shepherded numerous deals, acquisitions and divestments.

Alex Gorsky, Johnson & Johnson's chairman and chief executive officer, said Peterson had been a "dynamic business partner and inspirational leader".

Peterson joined Johnson & Johnson in December 2012. She was previously chairman and chief executive officer of Bayer CropScience in Germany.

Changes to leadership team

Johnson & Johnson is making a number of changes at the top to ensure a "seamless transition" for the operations overseen by Peterson.

With effect from 2 July 2018, Joaquin Duato and Paul Stoffels will be promoted to the position of vice chairman of the Executive Committee. Both will continue to report to Gorsky.

Duato – who is currently executive vice president and worldwide chairman, Pharmaceuticals – will be responsible for the Consumer and Pharmaceuticals divisions, as well as the Supply Chain, IT, Global Services, and the Health and Wellness businesses.

Stoffels is currently executive vice president and chief scientific officer. He will be responsible for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Global Public Heath, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, External Innovation, Pharmaceuticals Business Development and Healthcare Technology.

In addition, Ashley McEvoy, company group chairman for Consumer Medical Devices has been appointed executive vice president and worldwide chairman, Medical Devices. She will report to Gorsky and become a member of the Executive Committee.

Jennifer Taubert, company group chairman for the Americas, Pharmaceuticals, has been appointed executive vice president and worldwide chairman, Pharmaceuticals. She will report to Duato and become a member of the Executive Committee.

Kathy Wengel, worldwide vice president of Johnson & Johnson Supply Chain has been appointed executive vice president and chief global supply chain officer. She will report to Duato and become a member of the Executive Committee.

Michael Sneed, worldwide vice president, global corporate affairs and chief communication officer, will become executive vice president global corporate affairs and chief communication officer. He will continue to report to Gorsky, and will become a member of the Executive Committee.
