Holland & Barrett names Walden as chairman

Holland & Barrett International has appointed John Walden – former managing director of Argos and chief executive officer of Home Retail Group – as chairman.

The health and wellness retailer said Walden would work closely with its management team on an "ambitious strategic plan to build digital retail leadership and a global platform for delivering the most ethical health and wellness products and services".

Holland & Barrett International pointed out that Walden had worked in consumer-driven retailing for more than 20 years, leading transformational and digital change for retailers in the US and the UK. It added that he had transformed Argos into one of the UK's leading digital retailers.

Walden has been a non-executive director of Holland & Barrett International since it was acquired by L1 Retail in August 2017.

Reporting its financial results for the 12 months ended 30 September 2018, Holland and Barrett International said revenues had reached GBP703 million (USD899 million), representing a rise of 7.1% compared to the same period a year earlier. Around 80% of this figure was generated in the UK and Ireland.

Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) were up by 1.3% to GBP152 million.
