2 November 2018 - Deborah Wilkes
McKesson has announced that its chairman and chief executive officer, John Hammergren, will retire on 31 March 2019.
The US-based drug distributor's new chief executive officer will be Brian Tyler, currently president and chief operating officer. Tyler will retain the position of president.
The new chairman will be Edward Mueller, currently lead independent director on McKesson's Board of Directors.
Hammergren joined McKesson nearly 20 years ago and has been chief executive officer for more than 17 years.
McKesson pointed out that under Hammergren's leadership the company had more than quadrupled its annual sales to USD208 billion, expanded into global markets and advanced to number six on the Fortune 500.
Tyler is a 21-year veteran of McKesson
Commenting on Tyler, McKesson said he had led "nearly every major business within the company as well as McKesson's corporate strategy and business development unit".
Tyler has been with McKesson for 21 years. He was recently promoted from chairman of the Management Board at McKesson Europe, formerly Celesio, to president and chief operating officer of McKesson (click here to read the News story).
Mueller said Tyler had a "strong point of view" on the future of the healthcare industry, both in the US and globally.
Reporting its financial results for the three months ended 30 September 2018, McKesson said sales had reached USD53.1 billion, up by 2% compared to the same period a year earlier.
