The Australian Self Medication Industry (ASMI) is changing its name to Consumer Healthcare Products Australia (CHP Australia) with effect from 3 June 2019.
Chairperson Lindsay Forrest said the new name "better represents the industry in which our members operate". Forrest added that it also brought the industry association in line with its international counterparts, Consumer Healthcare Products Canada (CHP Canada) and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) in the US.
Forrest said the industry association would continue to focus on "ensuring Australians have the information and products available to practice self-care with confidence".
Chief executive officer Deon Schoombie commented: “We have been stepping up our advocacy efforts on behalf of the industry over the past few months and we will continue to advocate for greater investment and focus on measures to improve health literacy and preventive health, grow the consumer healthcare products industry through manufacturing and export opportunities, and increase access to non-prescription medicines so that consumers are empowered to make greater choices for their own self care."
Schoombie added that CHP Australia was gearing up for renewed focus on International Self Care Day in Australia on 24 July 2019.
The industry association's members unanimously endorsed the change of name and brand in April 2019.
